A Philosophy of Technology: From Technical Artefacts to Sociotechnical Systems

چکیده
In A Philosophy of Technology: From Technical Artefacts to Sociotechnical Systems, technology is analysed from a series of different perspectives. The analysis starts by focussing on the most tangible products of technology, called technical artefacts, and then builds step-wise towards considering those artefacts within their context of use, and ultimately as embedded in encompassing sociotechnical systems that also include humans as operators and social rules like legislation. Philosophical characterisations are given of technical artefacts, their context of use and of sociotechnical systems. Analyses are presented of how technical artefacts are designed in engineering and what types of technological knowledge is involved in engineering. And the issue is considered how engineers and others can or cannot influence the development of technology. These characterisations are complemented by ethical analyses of the moral status of technical artefacts and the possibilities and impossibilities for engineers to influence this status when designing artefacts and the sociotechnical systems in which artefacts are embedded. The running example in the book is aviation, where aeroplanes are examples of technical artefacts and the world aviation system is an example of a sociotechnical system. Issues related to the design of quiet aeroplane engines and the causes of aviation accidents are analysed for illustrating the moral status of designing, and the role of engineers therein. Table of

Shift from Sociotechnical Organizations to a Sociotechnical Society
• Socio-technical systems are not only the composition of to sub-systems but mainly characterized by certain special relationships between these types of systems (such as human-machine interaction, reciprocal inscription etc.; Herrmann, 2003) • Social and technical systems are fundamentally different: the first one is autopoietic and constituted by contingent communications while the latter is ...
متن کاملWorking with Technology in Complex Networks of Interaction
Contemporary issues such as increases in operational scope, connectivity, and dynamism in organizations have meant also a corresponding increase of complexity in producing everyday interaction. A simple task on the individual level can be approached as a part of complicated whole or even as adding to complexity on the organizational level. In this paper, we compare two strong metaphors for stud...
متن کاملThe STIN in the Tale: A Socio-technical Interaction Perspective on Networked Learning
In this paper, we go beyond what have been described as ‘mechanistic’ accounts of e-learning to explore the complexity of relationships between people and technology as encountered in cases of networked learning. We introduce from the social informatics literature the concept of sociotechnical interaction networks which focus on the interplay between participants, technology, learning artefacts...
متن کاملA formal theory for conceptualizing artefacts and tool manipulations
Artefacts (physical and institutional) are ubiquitous of our social environment. We live in a tight network of socio-technical systems, which are systems where agents interact with created objects. There is an increasing need for rigorous methods to model, specify, and reason about socio-technical systems in general, and about artefacts and their functions in particular. We propose a formal the...
متن کاملTowards a Theory of Socio-technical Interactions
Technology enhanced learning environments are characterized by socio-technical interactions. Socio-technical interactions involve individuals interacting with (a) technologies, and (b) other individuals. These two critical aspects of socio-technical interactions in technology enhanced learning environments are theoretically conceived as (a) appropriation of sociotechnical affordances and (b) st...
